Why Sanctuary Tours?
Chimpanzees used to live in 25 countries including equatorial Africa to southern Senegal, through Central Africa to western Tanzania. Today they are extinct in 4 of these countries and are close to disappearing in 5 more. Only 50 years ago it is estimated there were several million in the wild. Now due to deforestation and commercial hunting for bushmeat, numbers are estimated to be only around 150,000.

The cheetah is Africa’s most endangered big cat and is now close to extinction due to loss of habitat, diminishing gene pool, prey and human persecution. Exact numbers are unknown but where cheetah used to roam across Asia and Africa there are now thought to be only 12,000 left in the wild with some predicting extinction by 2013.

In the not too distant future there is a real possibility that these animals will exist only in sanctuaries, and so it is up to us to make sure that the sanctuaries themselves can not only survive and support the ever increasing numbers but also offer the very best quality of life for these amazing animals.

When you come on a Sanctuary Tours trip, you are directly supporting the sanctuaries that work so selflessly to keep these species alive which will perhaps be the only way they won’t disappear all together.
